Swine flu spread in India

Twenty two deaths have been reported due to swine flu in India till August 14, 2009. Of the total deaths, 10 deaths are registered in Pune city alone. There is a great need to make people aware about the disease, its symptoms and preventive measures.

Symptoms:

fever (greater than 100°F or 37.8°C),
sore throat,
body ache and fatigue.
running nose, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Test: Test is carried out on a respiratory specimen taken within the first four to five days.

Precautions:

cover the mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing
wear a mask while going close to the infected person

always wash hands frequently with soap and water

sanitize surface with alcohol or bleach bleach that have been touched by patients with influenza symptoms.
Treatment
Infected people should consume plenty of liquids
have plenty of rest
avoid using alcohol and tobacco
take medications such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) to relieve the fever and muscle aches, if necessary
don’t take preventive medications
consult doctors immediately where facilities for testand medication are available

New UGC regulations for admission to Ph.D. and M.Phil

UGC ‘s new regulation to maintain minimum standards forhigher education was published in the Gazette. New rgulations are to govern admission procedure for M.Phil and Ph.D. Now onwards, a common admission test followed by an interview will be organized by individual institutions. Institutions have to advertise either in thew newspapers or to publish at their own websites about the availability of the seats in each dscipline for admission to M. Phil or Ph.D. A supervisor can guide maximum eight Ph.D. and five M. Phil students at any point of time. Draft direct taxes code to replace (India)Income tax Act 1961

India’s Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee presented the draft of direct taxes code with the objective to simplify tax structure in India. This has twofold objectives: 1. To simplify tax structure by reducing tax rates and removing several tax exemptions and 2. broaden the tax base. In first instance, tax payers get shocked when they found the news flashing on their TV screen: 10% income tax upto Rs 10 lakh income. Their dreams get shattered when they are told that GPF/gratuity etc will be subject to tax at the time of money withdrawal. Likewise, there are several points envisaged in the new code that can be uneconomical to tax payers.
